I love going to Barnes & Noble to browse with a cup of coffee in hand. I love purchasing books that I promise myself I will read. But, they typically end up on a shelf with only about 20-30 pages read. Is it because I choose bad books? I don’t think so. I just haven’t been able to focus on them recently after staring at a computer screen all day. To digress a little: When I attended the Internet Summit last month I was pretty inspired by the keynote speaker, Warren Adelman- President & COO of GoDaddy. Whether you love or hate them, their customer service strategy is pretty impressive and clearly it’s working because they are HUGE and continuing to grow.
Anyway, on my next Barnes and Noble adventure I decided to see if I could find a book about GoDaddy’s path to success. I am sure one exists but they didn’t seem to have it that day so I went with the Zappos.com story instead. It’s called ‘Delivering Happiness- A Path To Profits, Passion and Purpose’ by their CEO, Tony Hsieh and it was recently named one of the ‘Year’s Best Books for Business Owners’ by Inc. Magazine. I am only about halfway through but would highly recommend it! One of my favorite points so far:
“At most web sites, the contact information is usually buried at least five links deep and even when you find it, it’s a form or e-mail address that you can only contact once. We take the exact opposite approach. We put our phone number (1-800-927-7671) at the top of every single page of our website, because we actually want to talk to our customers. And we staff our call center 24/7.”
Amen! Too many websites are missing phone numbers these days. The book makes SO many other good points but I don’t want to give away everything. If you haven’t read it, I would suggest picking it up! Maybe we will have a snow day soon so I can finish it up! Has anyone else read it already? What did you think?
